The procedure is often performed as an emergency when patient is suffering from acute appendicitis. It is also performed to avoid appendicitis in future if the patient was not operated at the time acute appendicitis.
There are two types of appendectomies performed:
- Open appendectomy
- Laparascopic appendectomy.
It is performed in the operating room where patient’s skin is shaved to remove hair and all sterility precautions are followed to prevent infection. The open method of appendectomy involves creating a 2 to 3 cm incision while laparascopic surgery involves creation of small incisions in the abdomen and use of laparascope to visualize and then remove the appendix.
It depends on the type of surgery you have. Recovery time in a laparascopic appendectomy is shorter than open surgery. The patients can resume work in few days but resuming normal activities can take up to 4 to 6 weeks.
Laparoscopic appendectomy comes with minimal side effects, however, some patients may experience following side effects: dull pain near the naval, loss of appetite, abdominal swelling, persistent fever, inability to pass gas, and nausea/vomiting.
During a laparoscopic surgery, your surgeon may decide if you need an open appendectomy surgery or not. In case there is a perforated appendix and the infection has spread, you will need an open appendectomy. Less pain and scarring is caused by laparoscopic surgery than open appendectomy surgery.
